In the upcoming show ‘The wilderness flourishes’ artist Marc Raven exhibits his search for the different ways in which we experience art. The works shown in the domed space of ‘Bradwolff Projects’ [a former Civil Hospital] are a collection of curious, abstract objects. Derived from sections of [Raven’s earlier paintings] they reveal the sublime character of natural imperfection. Raven wonders “how the experience of art is achieved through the realisation of the art works”.
‘The wilderness flourishes’ refers to the title of a poem by the Dutch poet Hans Faverey. Within the lines of the poem Raven recognises the capacity of the artist/author to allow art to speak an independent language. Raven’s works are born from a series of actions in time which lead to an almost magical accumulation of energy. In contrast to the material that the art consists of, its viability is determined by its relationship with time and its sensitive recognition of daily existence. Raven states that his works come to life when he simultaneously experiences harmony and disharmony in the world around him. The work can only be fully expressed when there is space for contemplation, then the work finds its purpose: to reflect on human nature.
‘The wilderness flourishes’ tries to express the language of art. The dialogue is achieved through the modest scale of the works themselves and the natural way in which they relate to the space. The Bradwolff Projects space offers the work of Raven the opportunity not only to recognise itself but also to recognise a deeper human need: to express the elusiveness of being.
