Up until the late Sixties, the museum curator was responsible for presenting artworks. With the exhibition ‘Live in your Head: When Attitudes Become Form’ in 1969, Harold Szeeman introduced the role of the curator as that of an independent curator in the art world. Gradually, the role of the curator has developed into the creator of [current] thematic exhibitions, which often feature works by various artists.
Where does the border lie between the artwork, the context, and the curator? The curators of ‘curatedBY’ examine this question on the basis of their own and each other’s private collections, as this is a place where you don’t select artworks as a curator but from your personal fascination. They also look for the potential attraction that can emerge between the works themselves without placing them in a thematic framework, as a way of finding new insights for their curatorship. Bradwolff shows the result of this tryout with works by artists from these collections.
